The Work Number Helps Unlock Opportunities with Automated Employment Verification
THE WORK NUMBERⓇ FROM EQUIFAX CONTINUES TO TRANSFORM VERIFICATION OF INCOME AND EMPLOYMENT to help support essential life events. Powered by The Equifax Cloud™, The Work Number provides a trusted and more secure way for financial institutions, employers, and government agencies to verify income and employment status instantly.
Equifax has the trust of more than 4.2 million employers nationwide who contribute to The Work Number database, reducing obstacles for consumers when applying for credit, jobs or social services.
“As The Work Number expands, we’re able to help even more people," said Adrien Borger, Product Leader for The Work Number with Equifax. “Consumers can often gain easier access to crucial financial and social services, employers spend less time with the administrative burden of manual verifications with stacks of printouts, pay stubs and games of phone tag, and verifiers benefit from a more streamlined application process. It’s a win-win-win scenario.”
Outdated manual verification processes can also pose greater security risks, which could increase the likelihood of a data security issue. The Work Number uses stringent security standards to help protect data. These protocols include advanced data encryption, physical security controls in the data centers, and need-to-know access. For the fifth year in a row, a leading global research and advisory firm found that Equifax outperformed all major industry benchmarks related to its security maturity score. Equifax also maintains a security posture score that exceeds Technology and Financial Services industry averages, helping to move financial approvals, background checks, and benefit applications forward confidentially without unnecessary delays.
In 2024, The Work Number processed 149 million verifications, nearly 400,000 requests on any given day, supporting 6.4 million auto loan applicants, 4.5 million job candidates, and 25.5 million people seeking government benefits, reinforcing its role in expanding financial access and efficiency. The Work Number benefited 52 million people last year with automated income and employment verifications outside of regular business hours. And when it comes to determining eligibility and getting benefits in the hands of people in need, speed and access to information can really matter.
Agencies that handle verifications themselves may manually check submitted information against other sources, such as public wage data sources, which may give an outdated view of income since it can be up to 120 days old. This can lead to significant delays in benefit processing, multiple submissions and even greater delays in decisions for vital government assistance.
As Equifax continues to expand The Work Number, adding more employers and refining its capabilities, the service remains a crucial tool in helping organizations and consumers access financial and career opportunities faster, and more securely. By reducing bottlenecks in verification processes, The Work Number empowers individuals and organizations to navigate life’s pivotal moments with greater confidence.
