How do credit report errors happen?

Credit report errors can happen when errors are made by a lender or creditor reporting to a nationwide credit bureau. They can also happen as a result of identity theft or if two people have common names, similar Social Security numbers, similar birthdates or similar addresses.

If you spot something you believe may be an error on your credit reports, contact the lender or creditor on the account. You can also file a free dispute with the three nationwide credit bureaus. Visit our dispute page to learn more about filing a dispute with Equifax.
