How It Works
It's the best ... but it's not perfect
The sheer size and velocity of credit reporting in the US is staggering. Equifax, for example, maintains active credit histories for nearly 200 million US consumers as reported by over 15,000 data providers such as credit card companies, banks and other financial institutions, and other sources of financial information. To keep pace with the dynamic and fast moving American economy, Equifax alone makes approximately 2 billion updates each month to its consumer reporting database so that its records are accurate and up-to-date, based on the information provided to Equifax. While no other credit reporting system in the world compares to the U.S. credit reporting system, it is possible that, as in any complex data system, inaccurate or incomplete information may occur in your credit report.
If you believe that any item of information contained in your Equifax credit report is incomplete or inaccurate, simply notify us directly and we will promptly investigate the matter on your behalf with the source that provided the information. Within a month of your dispute request (45 days if your dispute is based upon your free annual disclosure report), either Equifax or CSC Credit Services (depending on who owns your credit file) should notify you of the results of its dispute reinvestigation and provide you with a credit file reflecting the results of the reinvestigation at no charge. You should examine it carefully to make sure inaccuracies have been corrected or removed. If information you disputed has been re-verified, it will remain in your credit file, but you can request that it be shown as disputed and you can add a statement of explanation to your credit file. If you dispute online, you may check the status of your dispute by clicking here and entering your Confirmation Number.
