Equifax Canada Commends Federal Government for the Passing of Bill S-4
Ottawa, October 27, 2009 -- -- Equifax Canada publicly voiced congratulations to federal government for passing key legislation to criminalize identity theft, at a press conference held today in Ottawa.
Equifax Canada statistics show that over the past two years, consumers reported over 40,000 cases of identity theft/fraud. Equifax Canada believes the top priorities for the industry must include detecting fraud at the first possible opportunity, minimizing the number of legitimate consumers impacted by fraud and improving techniques to help organizations stay nimble when preventing and responding to fraud.
Equifax Canada’s Vice-President, Government Services, John LaVecchia, was on hand to support the government on this timely initiative:
“Canadians will benefit from strategies that involve coordinated efforts from governments, industry, law enforcement, and consumers. As Canada's largest credit reporting agency and consumer Identification services company, Equifax Canada would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the government and, in particular, the Ministry of Justice for recognizing and taking positive and persistent action to help address the growing problem of identity theft throughout Canada. This landmark legislation is a significant step forward in the protection of Canadians against identity related crimes”, Mr. LaVecchia stated.
