He served as Chairman of the Board from August 2004 until February 2005, and Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer from 1990 until August 2004. He remains a director of Genuine Parts Company and is also a director of SunTrust Banks, Inc., Crawford & Co. and John H. Harland Company.
