Canadian Legal Reports
Can I find out about legal actions a company may be involved in?
The appearance of a legal item in a credit report could seriously impact a company’s
ability to obtain credit in the marketplace. Unless the matches are almost exact, Equifax will not match a legal item to a
credit report. The reasons for unmatched actions range from typographical errors to lawyers serving papers on official
corporate record addresses instead of a company’s actual physical address. Thus, thousands of legal items are stored
in the Equifax database, yet are not matched to specific credit reports.
Searching this database can be done by name only. Unique to Equifax is the ability to search this database by
Defendant name or by Plaintiff name. So, you can see who is suing the company you are inquiring and whom the
company is also suing.

How does it work?
Customers can order legal reports on line through the Internet or with our Equifax Direct software or by contacting our
National Customer Centre at 1-877-227-8800. Simply type in the name of the company your are researching and
indicate whether you are requesting a report by plaintiff or by defendant. A list of all the similar names is returned
indicating the number of legal items under each. You are not charged for this search – only when you select a match
that you think is right. Up to 25 separate legal actions are provided in chronological sequence.
